GR9S800603BN Goodman 60,000 BTU Gas Furnace
GR9S800603BN is a Goodman residential gas furnace designed to provide dependable heating and flexible indoor airflow. It delivers 60,000 BTU per hour of heating input, approximately 48,000 BTU per hour of heating output and 80% AFUE performance. Its single-stage heating system and nine-speed ECM blower make it suitable for compatible residential split HVAC systems.
The furnace supports upflow or horizontal installation and uses a 17.5-inch-wide cabinet. It can be combined with an approved evaporator coil and outdoor air conditioner to create a complete gas split system. The furnace, coil and condenser must be correctly sized and matched before installation.
60,000 BTU Heating Input
The GR9S800603BN has a rated natural-gas heating input of 60,000 BTU per hour. With its 80% AFUE rating, it delivers approximately 48,000 BTU per hour of usable heating output under standard test conditions.
AFUE represents the percentage of fuel energy converted into useful seasonal heat. An 80% AFUE furnace transfers approximately 80% of the fuel’s energy into the conditioned space, while the remaining portion exits through the combustion venting system.
A professional heating-load calculation should be completed before selecting the furnace. Climate, insulation, windows, air leakage, ceiling height, ductwork and building construction all influence the required heating capacity. A 60,000 BTU furnace should not be selected using square footage alone.
Single-Stage Gas Heating
The GR9S800603BN uses a single-stage gas valve. When the thermostat calls for heat, the furnace operates at its available heating capacity until the indoor temperature reaches the selected setting.
This straightforward configuration provides familiar operation and service requirements. Proper sizing remains important because an oversized single-stage furnace may cycle too frequently, while an undersized furnace may struggle to maintain comfort during periods of high heating demand.
Nine-Speed ECM Blower
The GR9S800603BN includes a nine-speed electronically commutated blower motor. Its available speed settings allow the installer to coordinate airflow with the heating application, evaporator coil, outdoor air conditioner and duct system.
This model supports up to 3 tons of nominal cooling airflow under appropriate operating conditions. Actual airflow depends on the selected speed setting, evaporator coil, filter condition, duct static pressure and complete equipment configuration.
The 3 ton designation refers to the blower’s maximum nominal cooling support. It does not mean the furnace produces three tons of heat. Heating performance is determined by its 60,000 BTU input and approximately 48,000 BTU output.
Upflow or Horizontal Configuration
The GR9S800603BN is designed for upflow or horizontal installation. In an upflow application, return air enters through the lower portion of the cabinet and conditioned air exits through the top. In an approved horizontal application, the furnace operates on its side.
Installation orientation, return-air configuration, venting, combustion-air requirements and service clearances must follow Goodman’s instructions. The furnace should never be installed in a position not approved by the manufacturer.
This furnace is intended for compatible site-built residential applications. It should not be installed in a manufactured or mobile home unless the equipment certification specifically permits that application.
Durable Heat Exchanger and Ignition
The furnace uses a heavy-duty aluminized-steel tubular heat exchanger designed for dependable heat transfer and resistance to repeated thermal cycling. A single-stage gas valve regulates fuel flow during heating operation.
A durable hot-surface igniter lights the burners electronically when the thermostat requests heat. This eliminates the need for a continuously burning standing pilot. The single-speed induced-draft blower supports combustion airflow and moves combustion gases through the approved venting system.
The self-diagnostic control board stores fault information to help qualified technicians identify operating problems. Color-coded low-voltage terminals can also simplify thermostat and accessory connections during installation.
Compact Residential Cabinet
The GR9S800603BN measures approximately 33⅜ inches high, 17.5 inches wide and 28 inches deep. Its listed shipping weight is approximately 100 pounds. The compact B-width cabinet must be matched with the selected evaporator coil or an approved transition.
Cabinet dimensions are not the same as required installation clearances. The contractor must provide sufficient room for return air, supply ductwork, combustion air, venting, filter replacement and future maintenance.
Electrical and Gas Requirements
This Goodman furnace operates on a 115-volt, single-phase, 60 Hz electrical supply. Published specifications list a minimum circuit ampacity of approximately 7.7 amps and a maximum overcurrent device of 15 amps.
The gas connection is 1/2-inch FPT. The factory fuel configuration must be confirmed before installation. Conversion to propane requires the correct manufacturer-approved conversion kit, gas-pressure adjustments and professional combustion testing.
Electrical wiring, grounding, gas piping and overcurrent protection must follow the equipment nameplate, Goodman installation instructions and applicable codes. All gas connections must be properly inspected and tested for leaks before operation.
Venting and Emissions Requirements
As an 80% AFUE furnace, the unit requires code-compliant combustion venting. Vent material, diameter, termination, combustion air and clearances must follow the installation manual, National Fuel Gas Code and local regulations.
This product is listed as a non-Low-NOx configuration. It may not satisfy emissions requirements in certain regulated jurisdictions. Local furnace-efficiency, fuel and emissions rules should be confirmed before purchase.
Compatible Cooling Equipment
The GR9S800603BN is the gas furnace only. It does not include an outdoor condenser, evaporator coil, thermostat, refrigerant line set, filter cabinet, venting materials or installation accessories unless those items are specifically included in a package.
For central air conditioning, the furnace must be paired with a compatible evaporator coil and outdoor condenser. Coil width, refrigerant type, blower airflow and certified equipment matching must be confirmed before ordering.
The furnace may include controls designed to support newer refrigerant safety requirements, but refrigerant does not circulate through the furnace itself. The coil and outdoor unit determine the complete system’s refrigerant type and SEER2 rating.
Professional Installation Required
The GR9S800603BN must be installed and commissioned by a qualified HVAC professional. Installation includes gas-pressure adjustment, combustion testing, venting, electrical wiring, blower setup, temperature-rise verification and safety-control testing.
